The Mayor of the Blantyre City, His Worship Councilor Isaac Jomo Osman, on 12 May 2026 presided over the official opening of the newly reconstructed Nasolo Bridge in Ndirande Township, Blantyre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge, which was destroyed by Cyclone Freddy in 2023, has been rebuilt with financial support from the Beit Trust in partnership with Malawi Government at a total cost of K1.2billion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking after the official opening ceremony, Osman said the bridge will help reconnect communities on both sides of the river and improve mobility for residents in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis bridge is important because it reconnects communities and restores safe movement for people who depend on this crossing every day,\u201d said Osman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also stressed the need for residents to protect the environment and avoid polluting the river. He deplored the acts of sandmining, vandalism, and theft of public infrastructure. He called upon all residents to jealously guard against such behaviors which would contribute to the deterioration of the investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beit Trust trustees\u2019 Africa Representative, David Long, said the organization funded the project following an appeal made after the devastation caused by Cyclone Freddy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long said the trust worked with local stakeholders, including the City Council and Government agencies, to identify a project that would have a lasting impact on communities affected by the cyclone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe contributed 300,000 British Pounds <\/strong>into this project, recognizing that it was absolutely essential for the people of Ndirande, in Blantyre after the loss of the bridge to Cyclone Freddy \u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge reconstruction was after the destruction by Cyclone Freddy in 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beit Trust in partnership with the Malawi Government funded the project to the tune of MK1.2billion<\/strong>. Beit Trust contributed GB300,000 Pounds<\/em> equivalent of K766million<\/em> with Malawi Government contributing K403million.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first time Beit Trust has financed bridge projects; they also financed the Kamba to Queen Elizabeth Hospital bridge.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from infrastructural projects the trust also provides Postgraduate Scholarships, Emergency Relief and Conservation efforts in three countries, namely Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the notable projects funded by Beit Trust in Malawi include the construction of the Mulanje Mission Hospital, Beit Cure Hospital and Kamba to Queens Bridge in Blantyre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the trust marks 120 years of its operation, as it continues working for the benefit of the people in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
