The Roads Fund constitutes of fuel levy which is a fee charged on every litre of Petrol and Diesel.
The levy is collected, on behalf of the Roads Fund Administration by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) from companies that import Petrol and Diesel into the country.
Fuel levy is the biggest source of revenue for the Roads Fund and it accounts for over 85% of the Roads Fund annual income.
Effective 20th January 2026 the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) adjusted fuel pump prices. Petrol prices rose by 41.90%, while diesel prices increased by 41.29%. This change followed the reintroduction of the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM), which had been abandoned for the past three years.
