Directorate of Road Traffic & Safety Services

The DRTSS is a department under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works charged with the responsibility of administering regulatory provisions governing the road transport in Malawi.

The Roads Fund Administration allocates financial resources from the Roads Fund for selected road traffic management and road safety programmes. The RFA every year signs a service level agreement with the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services.

The DRTSS carries out axle load control using fixed and mobile weighbridges and road safety programmes using the roads fund.

The directorate also collects part of the road user charges from overload fines and motor vehicle licences. No portion of the road user charges collected by the DRTSS is currently transferred into the Roads Fund.

There are plans to transfer the responsibility of managing axle load control function to the RFA.
