The Roads Fund Administration, can on a cost sharing basis, finance routine and periodic maintenance of roads, tracks and trails under the responsibility of a City, Town, Municipal or District Council.
Since 2015, the RFA has allocated funds for maintenance and rehabilitation of roads, bridges, and streetlights in the following cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu under the Special City Roads Rehabilitation Programme (SCRRP).
Under the programme the RFA allocates funds annually to the City Councils and pays directly to the Contractors and Consultants engaged by the Councils.
The special city roads rehabilitation programme falls within an Annual National Roads Programme (ANRP) which is approved and signed between each Council as an Implementing Agent and RFA as a Financing Agency.
This arrangement has led to improved flow of funds and a number of visible projects within the councils which have changed the road infrastructure in the city councils.
A total of MK37.8billion has been allocated in the past seven years since the programme started.
The RFA is exploring the extension of the programme to the Municipal Councils of Mangochi, Kasungu, Luchenza and Balaka during the financial year 2023/24.
