RFA UPDATES MEDIA ON TOLL COLLECTION AND UTILISATION AS TOLL FEE REVENUE HITS 96PERCENT IN THE FIRST QUARTER
On Monday, 13 April 2026, the Roads Fund Administration held a press briefing to update the public on toll collection and utilization.
The briefing was a follow-up to its commitment to periodically update the public on the toll collections and utilization of funds.
In his briefing the Tolling Operations Manager, Dalitso Kadzamira indicated that since the new tariff adjustment effective 1st January 2026, the RFA had registered a gross toll collection of K1.8 billion in the first quarter covering 1st January to 31st March 2026.
This is a significant increase of 96 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, 2025.
“This increase is directly attributable to the toll adjustment in toll fees giving us more funds available for road maintenance”.
In his remark the Director of Finance, Alexander Makhwatha, thanked the media being a key and important player in informing the public on our role. “We cherish the relationship and look forward to continued engagement since roads are key to economic development”.
The RFA has allocated some additional resources from fuel levy amounting to K50billion for road rehabilitation to ensure that a number of bad sections identified by the Roads Authority of the tolled road are rehabilitated with urgency.
The RFA introduced road tolling with the opening of the first tollgate at Chingeni in Ntcheu in November 2021 as one way of broadening the revenue base for sustainable road maintenance.
Currently the RFA operates two tollgates with the other one at Kalinyeke in Dedza which became operational in January 2022.
The two tollgates are all along the M1 road between Blantyre and Lilongwe.
The RFA plan to increase the number of tollgates this financial year by constructing four more tollgates.
