Bailey Bridge to cut Travel Time

Lilongwe City Council has allocated funds for the construction of a 1.4km new road from Cherub in Area 47 to Area 49 near Bingu Stadium.

This was disclosed by the Lilongwe City Council newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Clement Stambuli during a consultative road financing meeting with the Roads Fund Administration on 20April 2026.

“We have engaged the Malawi Defence Force to construct the road and the bailey bridge across Lingadzi River”. This is an Inter-Agency transaction between public entities collaboration which will help residents of Area 49, Shire, 25 and Area 47 cut short travel time and decongest the Kaunda Road, said Stambuli.

“We anticipate that this project will be executed within the timeframes and at reasonable cost being an inter- agency collaboration within state enterprises. We are excited to finance this project and look forward to completion of the bailey bridge and the road”, stated Malata, RFA CEO.

The council has already procured the bailey bridge from the Japanese Contractor which was used as temporary access during the construction of the Lilongwe bridge.

The project is expected to be completed within six month
